Red Lentil Dahl recipe

Instructions to make:
– Soak 2 cups of red lentils overnight

  • drain, rinse, and boil lentils for 25-30 minutes until soft
  • as lentils are boiling skim the froth off the top of water
  • preheat on low a pot for making soup
  • put 2 tbsp of Ghee or Olive oil (vegan) in pot
  • place 1 tbsp of cumin seeds in oil
  • place 1 bay leaf in oil
  • stir and raise heat 1 level up
  • cut 1 medium red onion and add to the pot
  • stir and cook for 4-5 minutes
  • As onions brown a little add 1 tbsp of diced ginger, 2 cloves chopped garlic, and 1/3 serrano pepper diced
  • sauté for 3 minutes
  • add 3 small finely chopped tomatoes (Masala base)
  • cook down tomatoes
  • add 1 ounce of water to masala base as needed
  • add 1 tsp salt
  • add 1 half tsp of chili powder (Kashmiri)
  • add half tsp turmeric
  • add 1 tbsp fenugreek leaves
  • add a dash of water as needed to stir and mix the masala gravy
  • pour in 2 cups of red cooked lentils
  • add 1 ounce of water and stir
  • repeat until the soup-like consistency
    as the picture below
  • cook on medium for 4 minutes
  • lower heat to simmer 3 minutes longer covered
  • Final touches:
  • add 1/3 cup chopped coriander (cilantro)
  • add a heaping Tbsp of garam masala (recipe at top)
  • Serve
